The weather in May, and what to pack

Contest week falls in the middle of May, which on this coast is the good half of spring: long light, green hills, the Sea Garden in flower and the resorts not yet full. It is also not summer. The water is cold, the evening breeze off the bay is real, and rain arrives in short bursts rather than all day.

What May looks like

Averages for Burgas in May, rounded. Individual days swing either side of these — a still afternoon can feel like July, and a northerly wind can knock ten degrees off the same evening.

Average high
about 21 °C
Average low
about 12 °C
Sea temperature
about 16–17 °C

Swimmable if you are determined. Bracing if you are not.

Rain
Occasional showers

May is one of the wetter months, usually in short bursts.

Daylight
roughly 05:50 to 20:30

Sunset is late, which is why the city eats late.

What to pack

One rule covers it: dress for a warm day and a cool night on the water.

  • A layer for the evening — a jacket or a jumper you can carry all day.
  • A light waterproof, not an umbrella. The wind wins.
  • Shoes you can walk five kilometres in, over uneven pavement and Nessebar cobbles.
  • Sunglasses and sun cream — the light off the bay is stronger than 21 °C suggests.
  • Swimwear only if cold water is your idea of fun.
  • A power bank, because a show night is a long day on your phone.

Plugs and power

Bulgaria uses type C and F sockets at 230 V, 50 Hz — the same as most of continental Europe. Visitors from the UK, Ireland and outside Europe need an adapter.
