What to order on this coast, which streets to walk for dinner, and what a meal or a coffee actually costs.
The main pedestrian axis from the station towards the sea is lined end to end with terraces. Highest turnover, most English on the menus, prices a notch above the side streets. Best for a quick, safe meal between shows.
Cafés and restaurants along the park side, several with the bay in front of them. You pay for the view; take a coffee rather than a full dinner if you are counting.
Two blocks inland the prices drop and the kitchens get more Bulgarian. This is where to look for a mehana — a tavern with clay pots, rakia and no laminated photo menu.
Bulgaria takes coffee seriously and cheaply: espresso at a walk-up window is a fraction of western European prices, and specialty roasters have arrived in the centre. Anything called a sladkarnitsa is a pastry shop — go there for cake at 11am like everyone else.
