Fishing boats moored at Nessebar, up the coast from Burgas

How long

How many days to come for

Burgas is a small city with a very large region attached to it. Two days is enough for the city itself; the reason to stay longer is everything within ninety minutes of it — the old harbour towns, the salt lakes, the empty south. Pick the plan that matches the days you can take off.

Three days — the final weekend

Fly in Friday, out Sunday or Monday. You will see the city and one town up the coast, and nothing will feel rushed except the Saturday.

  • Friday: arrive, walk Bogoridi to the pier, dinner in the centre.
  • Saturday: Sea Garden and the Archaeology Museum in the morning, keep the evening for the final.
  • Sunday: Nessebar by bus, back for the afternoon.

Nine days — the whole contest week

Arrive the weekend before the first semi-final and leave after the final. This is the version that actually feels like Eurovision: shows on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and four free days in between.

  • Show days: keep the afternoon light and the evening free.
  • Free day one: Sozopol, the prettiest of the old towns.
  • Free day two: the salt lakes — Atanasovsko for the birds and the pink water, Poda for the hides.
  • Free day three: St Anastasia Island, or the Ethnographic and History museums if the boat is not running.
  • Free day four: nothing scheduled. You will want it.

Twelve days — the week plus the coast

Add three or four days either side and use Burgas as a base, or move down the coast after the final. May is the last month you get Strandzha to yourself.

  • South: Ropotamo river, Primorsko, Sinemorets and the Silistar beaches.
  • Inland: Brashlyan and Malko Tarnovo, the listed villages in the hills.
  • North: Pomorie salt, Cape Emine, Obzor.
  • One day for Plovdiv or Sofia on the way home if you fly out from there.

If you only get one day

Sea Garden, the pier, lunch by the water, the Archaeology Museum, then the bus to Nessebar for the late afternoon. That is Burgas and its coast in a single line.
