Getting to Burgas

The three airports

Burgas is the obvious one. Varna is the closest alternative and easy by coach. Sofia has the most flights all year, and the longest transfer.

Burgas (BOJ)

The city's own airport. Seasonal European routes build up through spring; the bus runs into the centre for the standard city fare.

Varna (VAR)

≈125 km north · about 2 hours by coachestimate

Frequent intercity coaches down the coast. Useful when a Burgas flight is full or badly timed.

Sofia (SOF)

≈385 km west · 4–5 h by coach, 6–7 h by trainestimate

Year-round flights from most of Europe, plus onward domestic hops. Add a night in Sofia rather than doing it all in one day.

Overland from Sofia

The coach is faster than the train and runs many times a day from Sofia's central bus station, next to the railway station. The train is slower but comfortable and cheap, and the run through the Sredna Gora is worth a window seat. Book coach seats online for contest week — this route fills at holidays even in a normal year.

• Coaches: Sofia central bus station to Burgas south station, several departures a day.
• Trains: BDZ fast services via Karnobat; check the timetable rather than assuming an hourly service.
• Driving: the Trakia motorway (A1) runs Sofia to Burgas end to end, with a vignette required.

From the airport into town

Line 15 links the terminal with the city. A taxi is the fallback: use a marked car from the rank, check the tariff sticker in the window, and insist on the meter.

Airlines publish May 2027 schedules through 2026 and adjust them constantly. Flexible tickets and free-cancellation rooms beat locking everything in early, because the flight map to Burgas in May will look different once the contest is in the calendar.
