The wooded banks of the Ropotamo river

South to Strandzha

Ropotamo Reserve

A river running out through forest to the sea, best seen by boat.

The Ropotamo is a short river with a long reputation: it cuts through flood-plain forest, past water lilies and a rock the locals call the Lion's Head, and empties over a sandbar into the sea. The reserve around it protects dunes, marsh and one of the last stretches of undeveloped coast this side of Turkey.

Small boats run up the river from the bridge on the main road in season. On foot, the trails and the beach at Arkutino are the reward.
