The excavated Roman baths at Aquae Calidae near Burgas

North and inland

Aquae Calidae

Roman and Ottoman thermal baths on the edge of the city.

Twenty minutes out of the centre at Vetren, hot mineral water has been drawing people for three thousand years: Thracians, Romans who built the town of Aquae Calidae around it, and Suleiman the Magnificent, whose bath house still stands over the spring.

The site is presented as Thermopolis, with the restored bath, a visitor centre and the excavated Roman town. It is the single best answer to what Burgas was before Burgas.
